Learn how hypnosis and EMDR can help manage PTSD

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can affect someone after they have been through a traumatic event. Many people think that PTSD only affects those who have served in the military, but this is not true. Any mentally healthy normal person can be affected by PTSD if they have had an experience that has seriously threatened their own life or the lives of their loved ones. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can have a serious impact on the life of the traumatized person. This can present as phobias and anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks of the traumatic experience. It can be challenging to live with PTSD but it is important to seek help early on in order to maximize the potential for recovery.

Everybody experiences stressful situations in their daily lives. It's a natural response. The body ramps up adrenaline and other hormones to prepare you to either get the heck out of Dodge or stand and fight off whatever is scaring you. But some people's bodies have that reaction to things that aren't normally stressful at all. They can't just "chill out" after the stress goes away. They stay wired and are always on alert for danger. It's like their bodies decide something might come along that they might need to be ready for (even though it may never happen). If this sounds like you, or someone you know, it probably means you have PTSD or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is psychotherapy, developed by Francine Shapiro in the late '80s, that is now routinely used worldwide to treat PTSD. Over this page, we look at what EMDR actually is and how it works. EMDR is a therapy that has been shown to be effective for many mental health problems which include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, phobias, and eating disorders. EMDR can also help with nonpsychological related problems such as addictions - including smoking, eating disorders, and post-operative pain.

How does EMDR work?

Ever heard of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)? It's one of the best therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It was originally developed over 30 years ago by a clinical psychologist, Francine Shapiro who noticed something strange in her therapy room. That was that many of her patients with PTSD, seemed to experience relief from their very distressing trauma memories after they had been making bilateral stimulation either through eye movements or tones and tones alone. She later came up with the 8-phase EMDR therapy which is now a widely used psychological treatment. The purpose of this article is to answer questions like "how does EMDR therapy work? What does science say about it & what exactly happens when we are

Hypnosis, EMDR, and Mindfulness the perfect antidote for PTSD?

Hypnosis and EMDR are two complementary treatments that can be used in conjunction with one another to help reduce the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often involves talking therapies or drugs, but there are also alternative methods that can help sufferers. At the Cumbria Hypnosis Mindfulness Clinic, we also use hypnotherapy, which is a proven technique to treat this condition. There has been a lot in the media recently about EMDR, and some celebrities like Angelina Jolie have even admitted using it to treat their own symptoms.

There has been a lot of interest in understanding the mechanism of action that lies behind the benefits of hypnosis for PTSD. The most common (and most plausible) theory is that hypnosis acts as a form of exposure therapy – and, specifically, imaginal exposure which involves mentally visualizing traumatic events to desensitize the fearful response to them.

Here at the Cumbria Hypnosis Mindfulness Clinic, we use therapeutic hypnosis which includes hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis, NLP, timeline therapy, applied kinesiology, life story work, and imagery fields to increase your wellbeing and overcome issues in your life.

I am an EMDR therapist based in Barrow, Cumbria. If PTSD is ruining your life and you would like to find an alternative solution then call now for a FREE consultation to see if you qualify for this service or click the link below.
